I thought these guys did a good job walking through some significant developments in audio production over the years. It’s interesting to see 100 years of progress in just 5 and a half minutes. I’m thankful for how far things have. I can’t see myself recording music back in the days of the gramophone, but I think I would have been happy doing so any time from about the 1950s onward.
It would have been interesting to see them also try different microphone techniques as they were developed. The band used to be “mixed” by arranging them near or far from a single microphone to get the right balance. These days, it’s not uncommon to see an engineer use 10 or 15 mics on a single drum set (personally, I think great sounding drums can be captured with somewhere between 2–4 mics).
