A couple of weeks ago I wrote my first hymn. For years, I’ve often drawn from scripture for inspiration for songs, but I’ve never written a hymn until this one. “Wayward Brother” is inspired by the story of the prodigal son found in Luke 15. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to record it soon to share.
I dug a pit to snare my brother in
I thought him vile and filled with sin
But when I searched my soul within
I fell into the pit I dug
I fell into the pit I dug
I am not worthy of esteem
But by His blood I’ve been redeemed
The dead now live! The lost are found!
The mourners make a joyful sound
For Christ has sought the sinner’s heart
And brought the wayward brother home
I’ve sowed the seeds, I’ve tilled the land
I’ve looked at my most righteous plans
But all I’ve done and all I am
No better than a criminal
No better than a criminal
I am not worthy of esteem
But by His blood I’ve been redeemed
The dead now live! The lost are found!
The mourners make a joyful sound
For Christ has sought the sinner’s heart
And brought the wayward brother home
My hope in man has been misplaced
My hope in self is but a waste
Just one hope left for me to taste
God’s grace alone has saved my soul
God’s grace alone has saved my soul
I am not worthy of esteem
But by His blood I’ve been redeemed
The dead now live! The lost are found!
The mourners make a joyful sound
For Christ has sought the sinner’s heart
And brought the wayward brother home
